In addition to the integration of classroom and the outdoors, these institutions require larger areas for sporting activities. Major program components, such as the cafeteria and auditorium, often have a corresponding outdoor space that can be integrated into the overall building and landscaping design to support daily activity as well as special events, such as graduations and lectures. Materials need to be hard wearing and low maintenance. Planting, seating and decks, provide a social gathering spaces for students. Planning shaded courts as transitions between classrooms and playing fields allows for a variety in scale of outdoor spaces while allowing effective monitoring. Large, communal play or meeting areas can provide protected, informal gathering spaces for students. Planter boxes for trees provide shade within the large expanse of sports courts, as well as seating for those who may be waiting for their turn to play. Decks provide areas for relaxing or eating lunch.
